Operating boiler equipment brings difficulties caused by impurities in the water that form sediment and deposits, as well as impurities with corrosive activity. Each type of contamination reduces the efficiency of the water-heating system and can eventually put it out of service. Using untreated water often causes problems with pumping equipment, damages pipelines and narrows their cross-section, and breaks heat exchangers and heating elements.
The main enemy of a thermal system is SCALE, caused by increased water hardness. With every millimetre of the scale layer, energy losses rise by 7–10%.
